At the Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibit
3/26/12

Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the preview and opening party for Jean Paul Gaultier's new exhibition held at the beautiful de Young Museum in San Francisco.  From meeting Mr. Gaultier himself to previewing the collection alongside some of my favorite fashion publications, it was an honor to be surrounded by so many influential individuals in the very town where I grew up.

During the press panel, Gaultier humbly covered a range of topics from finding inspiration in those who break stereotypical beauty molds to blurring the lines between masculinity and femininity.  It was particularly exciting to see him recall the intimate childhood moments (watching his Grandmother put on corsets and his first viewing of the film Falbalas) that sparked his initial desire to create.

Having seen the major fashion exhibitions at the de Young thus far, it's refreshing to see how Gaultier's presentation, much like his view on beauty, breaks molds in innovative ways.  Rather than displaying his 140+ ensembles in chronological order, Gaultier chooses to categorize his exhibit using 6 major themes: 'The Odyssey of Jean Paul Gaultier,' 'The Boudoir,' 'Skin Deep,' 'Punk Cancan,' 'Urban Jungle,' and 'Metropolis.'  The presentation also possesses a sense of complexity and humor that appropriately compliments Gaultier's daring designs.  Animated mannequins that talk, sing, blink and smile.  A revolving runway showcasing a number of looks in the brightly colored 'Punk Cancan' room.  Graffiti covered walls that serve as the backdrop for plaid mohair suits and studded chain-mail biker jackets.  I love how this exhibit truly captures and celebrates Gaultier's undeniable talent and character.

Here are a few of my favorite Gaultier snapshots from last Thursday and Friday, thanks to Instagram!
